History of A Bra: Their Travel From Ancient Times to Our Wardrobes Now

Bras have always been the most important clothing for women that they wear on a daily basis. But do we know how these bras that we wear today, have evolved since the 14^th century!

Let’s take a look at the history of bras in a slightly different style where the images below will show how women and their preferences for a bra have changed over time since 14^th century to the 19^th century to the 20^th century and now to the latest 21^st century.

The 14^th to 19^th century can be called as the era of corsets that pushed the breasts of the women up and were mostly worn by women of the higher class to accentuate their curves. It looks more like these:

In the 19^th century these corsets were modified into a corset that was divided into two parts where the lower part known as a girdle would shape the belly and the upper part enhanced with straps would support and shape the breasts.

In the early part of the 20^th century a revolution came about in the traditional corsets when only the brassier remained and the lower part making the women uncomfortable was discarded. The image alongside shows the girdle made in France in 1907 which provided support to the breasts, and each side was supported with the elastic straps.

A new style of brassier that was worn by an American women in 1906. This is where they came up with the idea of a brassier with a bit more comfortable fabric and pointy jut-outs, they had limited varied options in those times, compared to today, the variety in terms of colour, fabric , shape, was very limited . These were termed as “bullet-bras”.

What is regarded as the world’s oldest push-up bra was discovered in storage at the Science Museum in London. Designed to enhance cleavage, the brassiere is said to be from the early 19th century.

Thanks to the First World War and the increase in demand for metal which freed the women in the world of the uncomfortable corsets.

Later, there was a big transformation in the way the brassieres used to look in those days and how they look today.

Designers have also incorporated numerous devices to produce varying shapes, cleavage, and to give women bras they could wear with open-back dresses, off-the-shoulder dresses, plunging necklines, and the like.

Thankfully now we have evolved with a very wide range of variety of bras, there is a great revolution in the field of bras, a peek below shall compliment the way modern bras have evolved
